A Historical Overview of Elgandal Fort
Elgandal Fort, originally known as Veligundula, was built during the Kakatiya dynasty (1083–1323) and served as a stronghold for the Musunuri Nayaks, who were warrior leaders. In the 16th century, the fort was occupied by the Qutb Shahi dynasty, with Quinamul Mulk appointed as the commander.
Later, the fort came under the Mughal Empire’s control. Amin Khan was made the Khiledar (commander) during the reign of Nizam-ul-Mulk Asaf Jah I (r. 1724–1748). He was followed by Muqarrab Khan, and then Mirza Ibrahim Dhamsa, who became Khiledar during Nawab Salabat Jung’s rule. Dhamsa restored and fortified the fort in 1754, during Sikandar Jah’s reign (r. 1803-1823). Other Khiledars included Bahadur Khan and Karimuddin, after whom Karimnagar was named.
In 1905, the Sixth Nizam, Mahbub Ali Khan, moved the district headquarters from Elgandal to Karimnagar. The fort was protected by a moat filled with crocodiles, about 5 meters wide and 4 meters deep, to defend against enemy attacks.
